ALC Calls On Prompt Amendment To The Heavy Vehicle National Law

At a Senate Rural and Regional Affairs Committee meeting held in Canberra today representatives of the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) called for swift implementation of any amendments to the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) agreed to at the next meeting of the Infrastructure and Transport Ministers’ Meeting (ITMM).

At an inquiry examining the importance of a viable, safe, sustainable and efficient road transport industry, ALC asked the Committee to endorse the incorporation of its National Operating Standard that is designed to improve the safe operation of heavy vehicles on Australian roads into the HVNL.

However, representatives urged that any proposed amendments to the HVNL approved by the ITMM should be implemented within 12 months of the meeting, as recommended in the Conran Review of COAG Councils and Ministerial Forums. This is because the HVNL amendment process has been far too slow in the past, leaving the National Law to fall behind industry best practice.

ALC also discussed with the Committee its Single Freight Data Standard for the National Digital Framework, designed to allow operators to collect data that can be used for safety, compliance and planning purposes, which will be launched in Melbourne in June.
