The Australian Logistics Council’s submission to the Productivity Commission underscores the urgent need for nationally coordinated policy, investment, and regulatory alignment to support the decarbonisation of Australia’s freight sector—one of the most emissions-intensive and fuel-dependent parts of the economy. With over 90 per cent of transport fuels imported and energy infrastructure fragmented across jurisdictions, the submission calls for a national freight decarbonisation framework that aligns energy, transport, and planning policy to future-proof supply chains, reduce emissions, and strengthen resilience. It identifies six pillars of freight productivity—spanning infrastructure integration, industrial land use, workforce capability, and regulatory consistency—and outlines targeted actions including zero-emissions refuelling corridors, fast-tracked approvals, and harmonised emissions reporting. The submission also highlights the need to ensure Australian ports are future-ready with shore power and renewable integration, and to enable greater modal shift to rail through better access, pricing structures, and investment in underutilised intermodal infrastructure.
