The Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, and Regional Development Communications, Sport and the Arts sought industry feedback on a proposed amendment to the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard that would bring certain passenger-substitute vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes into the scheme. ALC supported the intent in principle but argued that the Government had not adequately quantified which vehicles would be affected, the likely commercial impacts or the emissions benefits. The submission called for real-world testing of the vehicle definitions, a clear exemption process for genuine work vehicles and assessment of emissions across the full freight or service task.
